What gets improved with each rank is determined by what Gem you’re upgrading.

There is, however, an additional, randomised, star rating on top of this first tier star rating for 5-Star Legendary Gems. You can slot up to six Legendary Gems in different pieces of equipment, but can’t equip more than one of the same type.
