Their appearances have been slightly modified and modernized as they are a darker gray color, their hands are gray instead of purple, their eyebrows are thinner and are gray, plus moulded into their faces and their eyes are smaller. Whomps reappear in the DS remake of Super Mario 64, Super Mario 64 DS, serving the same purpose as its predecessor and also appearing in the same areas. When a Whomp is defeated, Mario will be rewarded with five coins. Their king, the Whomp King appears as the boss of Whomp's Fortress. Though Whomps and Thwomps appear similar in more ways than one, Whomps appear to be much more intelligent than Thwomps, due to the fact they walk around, sometimes produce speech, and appear to have built the Mushroom Kingdom as it hints in Super Mario Galaxy 2, as well as in Super Mario 64 DS. They later appeared in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Mario could jump on top of a fallen Whomp and ground pound it to destroy it and if Mario was crushed by a Whomp he can be destroyed whole. If Mario came too close to a Whomp it would try to flatten him, then revealing the weak spot on its back, noticeable by an X shaped bandage. Their most recognizable appearance was in Super Mario 64. A majority of Whomps reside at Whomp's Fortress, which is ruled by the Whomp King who rules over the Whomps and Thwomps. Whomps are related to Thwomps, enemies that are also made out of stone. They are the minions of Bowser and the Whomp King. They are large, stone enemies that resemble stone rectangles with faces, hands and arms and feet (without legs). Whomps are tall, brick-like enemies with arms similar to Bomberman's and tiny red eyes who somewhat commonly appear in the Mario series.
